Southeast Michigan Youth Athletic League, Inc.
(SEMYAL)
Affiliated with American Youth Football (AYF)
The 2013 season was GREAT!! Last year we formed 34 football teams thanks to recruiting several quality youth football organizations. Also, this was the first time we allowed football teams not affiliated with SEMYAL to play on our schedule. We were sucessful crowning five competitive championship teams that represented our league at the AYF National tournaments December 7th through the 14th of 2013. Our cheer and dance squads competed in the Midwest Region Cheer, dance and step categories and earned the right to compete at the AYC National competitions in Kissiminee Florida December 12th through the 14th of 2013. Our instructional Tiny Mite and Mitey Mite football teams (ages 5-8) experienced the time of their young lives playing structured supervised tackle football games that concluded with exciting bowl games and invitations to travel out of state to play at the National games.
Our league is what you might call a “travel league” which means that not only do we play and cheer in the communities the children are from but we also travel to other cities, regions and states to compete as well. Travel introduces our youngsters to other youngsters with the same interests which ultimately teaches them valuable social skills and respect for others that lead to their becoming more well-rounded mature adults.
Our league also recognizes the importance of our scholar athletes in both football and cheer. We have a new scholar recognition program that motivate all of our participants to focus on high academic achievements.
Several associations make up our league. These associations are highly organized and very connected to the community. Our coaching and administrative volunteers are key to the success of our league. The associations’ volunteers contribute to fundraising efforts which allows our teams and squads to travel and compete against other teams and leagues. Only the best of the best volunteers are sought to coach our youngsters. Each of the coach volunteers must submit to a national background check. In addition, our coach volunteers must attend an extensive seminar training/presentation on how to properly teach and coach youngsters to properly cheer and play and manage the games. As part of this seminar training this year, it is required that all of our coaches learn about preventing, recognizing and responding to sports related concussions.
We emphasize to everyone that although the game is played to win or lose, coaches must emphasize these key factors:
1. Safety first
2. Every child must play
3. Always demonstrate sportsmanship and respect for others
If you know of or have youngsters who might want to participate in a fantastic football and cheer league, contact us!!
